HAIR HACK: CARING FOR COMBINATION HAIR

combination hair

Combination skin is something we hear about a lot in the language of beauty but here at Ogario London, we think combination hair is just as common. So, what’s the definition of combination hair? If you have an oily scalp and dry ends then we would describe that as combination. Are you battling this hair dichotomy? Don’t despair. We can help.

THINK ABOUT THE PRINCIPLES OF FACIAL SKINCARE

First things first. Start by focusing on the scalp. Your scalp produces an oil called sebum to provide moisture to the hair but when it becomes excessive the hairline can become greasy, which in turn attracts dirt that weighs heavily on the hair.

There are a number of factors that can cause excessive sebum, from diet to overworking the scalp when you wash your hair. Our advice is to think about treating your scalp in the same way that you would treat the skin on your face. For facial skincare, we choose gentle cleansers and we are careful not to rub the skin too hard. So why when we wash the scalp which is just as sensitive, and sometimes more so, do we choose harsh detergents and rub with more vigour than we would ever apply to the face?

AVOID OVERWORKING THE SCALP

Choose a gentle shampoo and avoid overworking the scalp. Think about how your hair is washed at the salon and take note. Its less fast and furious and more of a firm but gentle massage. Remember, overworking the scalp will create more sebum not less!

NETTLE IS PERFECT FOR BALANCING THE CONDITION OF THE SCALP

The right shampoo is key to caring for combination hair. If your scalp is excessively oily you may need to use a targeted product to rid the scalp of the oil once a week. Avoid using these products more than once a week as they can be drying. For the rest of the week (we recommend washing your hair a minimum of 2-3 times a week) choose a gentle shampoo. We recommend Revive and Shine Shampoo. It has gentle cleansing ingredients and contains nettle which is perfect for balancing the condition of the scalp. Avoid shampoos that target dry hair as these will be overly nourishing for an oily scalp.

Revive and Shine Shampoo contains Nettle to balance the scalp.

AVOCADO IS A POWERHOUSE INGREDIENT PACKED WITH NATURAL FATS FOR RE-HYDRATING HAIR

So combination hair types, once you’ve given your scalp some TLC, you can focus on those pesky dry ends. You’ll want to get as much moisture as possible into the ends and mid-lengths. So choose a conditioner that targets dry hair. We recommend Hydrate and Shine Conditioner. Not only does it contain lots of pro-vitamin b5, it has powerhouse ingredient avocado packed with natural fats for re-hydrating dry hair.

ITS ALL IN THE APPLICATION

Once you’ve chosen the right conditioner, try these basic application techniques to get moisture into the ends.

  1. After you have shampooed and rinsed your hair, squeeze excess water out of the hair, either with a towel or your hands, before applying conditioner.
  2. Focus on the ends and mid-lengths. When applying conditioner, the best way of avoiding your scalp is to work upwards from the tips to the mid-lengths.
  3. Leave your conditioner on for a couple of minutes to give it some extra time on those dry ends.

Remember to condition every time you wash your hair!

IT’S A HAIR AFFAIR: HAIR CARE TIPS

hair care

What hair most needs is to be loved.

Today we are going to get personal about hair care. How would you describe your affair with your hair? Tortured? Fallen out of love? A burning passion? A teenage romance?  It could be all of those things and more and for many of us it can change daily. So the real question is, how can we create balance in what can sometimes be a stormy relationship with our hair?

LETS GET BACK TO BASICS

Lets face it when it comes to hair care you have to be in for the long haul. There’s no getting out of this relationship so why not make it a positive one.

Start by understanding what your hair needs from you. What hair most needs is to be loved. Its simple, keep it clean, hydrated and don’t overload it with too many heavy products and you may find your hair becomes much more reasonable.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN PRACTICE?

Most of us should be washing our hair at least 2 to 3 times a week. For some people, with finer hair types you may find your hair a little more demanding and you may have to wash every day. Our advice is to go with the flow. If your hair needs to be washed every day then go with it. Every relationship is unique and respecting the individual needs of your hair will go along way to improving this very important relationship.

CHOOSE A GENTLE SHAMPOO

Once you’ve decided how often you’re going to wash and condition your hair, think about what your are going to use. Opt for a gentle shampoo that won’t irritate your scalp or strip the hair. There’s nothing like an irritated scalp to upset the balance of this beautiful relationship so keep it calm and don’t let anything come between you and your hair!  We recommend avoiding shampoos with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), particularly if you have a sensitive scalp.

We use a coconut derived surfactant in our shampoos. It gives a luxurious creamy lather but is still gentle on the scalp and the hair.

LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR HAIR IS TELLING YOU

It may seem like an obvious thing to say but listening is the key to success in any relationship. This is absolutely the case when it comes to your hair. If your hair is frizzy, it needs moisture. If your hair is dry, it needs moisture. If your hair is fly-away, it needs moisture. We could go one but you’ve probably got the picture. Hair needs to be moisturised regularly. It’s an essential part of your hair care routine. Skip this and risk a slump in the relationship with your hair.

There are those who believe that washing hair less frequently is the answer to solving the problem of dry hair. As with all relationships, everyone has an opinion and as with all relationships no-one really has the depth of understanding about your hair that you do. That knowledge is invaluable in this particular relationship and if your hair is clearly shouting out for moisture, then that’s what it needs. Conditioning every time you wash is essential to build moisture in hair.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONDITIONER FOR YOUR HAIR TYPE

Choosing the right products for your hair can make this relationship. Think about your hair type. If your hair is thick, curly, coarse, or excessively dry then go for a hydrating conditioner such as our Hydrate and Shine Conditioner. If your hair is finer or normal with no particular issues, then go for our lightweight Revive and Shine Conditioner.

Think about application and always squeeze out the excess water, after washing your hair and before conditioning. Concentrate on the ends and mid lengths of the hair. Don’t overload hair with conditioner. Less is more.

A WEEKLY TREAT

Building a routine with regular cleansing and conditioning is the perfect way to get this relationship back on track. By creating your own routine you should start to find your hair becomes easier to manage. But every relationship needs a bit of sparkle, a break from the same old routine.

A weekly hair mask is a perfect way to boost the condition of your hair and repair any damage from styling, colour -treatments or other environmental factors. Choose Ogario London Restore and Shine Hair Masque for the perfect shine-boosting treat for your hair. It will improve manageability, leaving hair much easier to style.

Enjoy this very special relationship with your hair, think positively, listen to your hair, take action and if you find things aren’t working out, then speak to your hairdresser to help you get it back on track.

HAIR HACK: TACKLE SPLIT ENDS FOR LUSTROUS LOCKS

split ends

Tackle split ends for lustrous locks

Glossy, sleek hair can be yours but there’s no getting away from it, you have to tackle those split ends. Split ends are a result of damage to the hair, often caused by heat but other environmental factors such as colour treatments or over-brushing can also have an effect.

Here we share 4 steps to put you on the path to lustrous locks.

STEP 1: CUT IT

Allow the split ends to linger and you’ll find they ride up the hair shaft, causing further damage to the hair and even breakage. Nip them in the bud with a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.

STEP 2: COOL IT

Give your hair a break from the straighteners, turn down the temperature on the hair dryer and let your hair dry naturally once a week.

STEP 3: LOVE IT

Love your hair and treat it well. Go gentle on brushing and drying. Don’t pull and tug the hair

particularly when its wet and at its most fragile.

STEP 4: TREAT IT

Treat your hair to some good ingredients. Choose hair products with ingredients that will add moisture not deplete it. We love pro-vitamin B5 for its ability to penetrate the hair with moisture and it helps to prevent split ends.

HAIR HEALTH: DO THE STRETCH TEST

Improving hair elasticity might be a term you’ve come across when scanning a bottle of shampoo or conditioner. It might even be something you’ve heard your hairdresser talk about. But for most of us its not a focus until the hair becomes difficult to style or worse, it starts to break.

WHO SHOULD CARE ABOUT HAIR ELASTICITY?

The answer to that question is that we all should care about improving hair elasticity. How much stretch your hair has is an indicator of how healthy it is. If you want great looking hair then it starts with getting it in good condition. Hair that doesn’t have sufficient elasticity can be prone to breakage and can also be frustratingly difficult to style. Often hair with low elasticity will not hold the shape after styling. If this sounds familiar then read on. We tell you how you can establish the elasticity of your hair by taking the stretch test. You can do this at home and it will be a good indicator of what kind of shape your hair is in.

THE STRETCH TEST

The stretch test is simple to do and knowing the condition of your hair will help in understanding how to style and care for your hair. When hair is wet, select strands of hair, hold securely and stretch the hair gently, without pulling on the root. If the hair stretches and returns to its original length when released, then elasticity is good. If there is any breakage or the hair doesn’t fall back into shape then its time to think seriously about improving the condition.

SO WHAT’S NEXT?

Once you’ve established the elasticity of your hair, there are two possible options. If you hair has good elasticity then think about maintenance. Regular conditioning and a weekly hair masque should be sufficient. Try to avoid styling products with alcohol-denat as they can be over-drying and keep up the good work!

If you find your hair has poor elasticity then don’t despair. With a good routine and some TLC you can improve the condition of your hair. We share our top tips for improving the elasticity of the hair.

  1. Regular conditioning. Always condition your hair after you shampoo. Think of it in the same way that you look after your face. After cleansing, moisturise.
  2. If the condition is very poor use an intensive mask treatment twice a week for at least 2 weeks. This will help to rehydrate your hair and give it a much needed boost.
  3. After 2 weeks of intensive treatment the hair should be starting to improve. You can now kick off a regular routine of giving your hair a mask treatment once a week. Take some time out from heated styling tools to give your hair a chance to recover. If you can’t bear to be without your hairdryer then choose a cooler heat setting and try not to over-dry your hair. Less is more!
  4. If you are using the Ogario London Restore and Shine Hair Masque, we recommend leaving on the hair for as long as possible. For example, you can leave it on for a couple of hours or even overnight. For more tips on using our mask check out our blog POST-HOLIDAY HAIR: BANISH THE BURN-OUT.
  5. Look out for shampoos, conditioners and styling products with ingredients that will improve hair elasticity. Honey is a favourite ingredient of ours as it improves elasticity, leaving hair supple. We love it so much its an active ingredient in our Styling Products and in our Hydrate and Shine Shampoo.

Sugar Beet increases strength, softness and shine.

Sugar Beet is the latest ingredient in our mission to banish dry hair. If your goal is to achieve shiny hair then the answer is hydration. Sugar Beet is one of the active ingredients in our styling range and it’s the perfect antidote to parched hair.

SUGAR BEET IS A NATURAL MOISTURISER FOR SHINY HAIR

A natural moisturiser Sugar Beet increases the water retention of hair fibres, improving strength, shine and softness. Extract from the Sugar Beet is highly purified. It protects against environmental damage and dehydration leaving hair shinier and easier to manage.

WE LISTENED TO OUR CUSTOMERS

Our customers told us they wanted styling products that wouldn’t leave the hair dry or sticky. They wanted control and hold, whilst leaving movement in the hair. Most of all they wanted styling products that wouldn’t make hair dull.

We spent two years developing the range in our hair salon, selecting ingredients and testing the formulations.

STYLE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Our challenge was to create styling products that would deliver results without compromising the health of the hair.
