I have over 35 years of experience in the salon business, and in this blog, I’ll share my expert advice on how to care for natural hair.

Natural Hair | Overview

Portrait of joyful woman with afro hair smiling over white background. Isolated. High quality photo.

All curly hair has dips and lifts, making it uneven. That uneven structure leaves it prone to frizz, breakage and moisture loss.

Afro-textured coily curls are a small curl type. The tight coils are more fragile as they have more dips and lifts, making the hair more prone to breakage.

That breakage results in moisture loss. Adding moisture to your hair will improve the flexibility of the hair structure, prevent breakage and help your hair retain moisture.

Adding moisture to your hair is the priority for natural hair.

Afro-textured coily hair is often, not always, dense. Density makes the hair more prone to moisture loss.

This curly hair type is thirsty, and building a routine of deep conditioning is the answer to achieving healthy, soft, natural hair.

Natural black hair requires regular moisture boosts to maintain flexibility and avoid breakage and moisture loss.

Adding moisture to your hair will give you more clearly defined curls. Plus, the added moisture will leave your hair flexible, frizz-free and easy to style.

In this blog, I’ll share my expert advice on how to add moisture to natural hair.

Moisture is the foundation of healthy hair. Build a good foundation with a hair care routine using a good quality natural hair mask for healthy natural hair.

How to Care for Natural Hair

1. Deep Condition

To maintain the moisture in natural black hair, I recommend deep conditioning with Restore and Shine Hair Masque once a week. My exclusive formula expertly blends pro vitamin b5 with glycerin for a perfectly balanced moisture boost.

Pro-vitamin B5 is one of the few ingredients that can penetrate the cuticle to get moisture to the hair’s core. Glycerin helps prevent moisture loss by smoothing and sealing the cuticle.

2. Take Care when Detangling Natural Hair.

Your hair is at its most fragile after washing. Treat it like a delicate fabric. A microfibre towel is a good investment for drying hair without damaging the cuticle.

Wrap your hair in a towel for a few minutes, and then gently squeeze the hair with the towel to soak up any excess water. Your hair should be damp but not dripping wet. You can detangle hair at this stage, being careful not to pull at the roots.

Use products that can help you detangle the hair.

Restore and Shine Hair Masque is the best product for detangling coily or afro-textured hair. With emollients such as glycerin, avocado oil and tocopherol (vitamin E), you can feed this deep conditioner into the ends of afro-textured hair to detangle and soften. Your hair will absolutely love those nourishing ingredients.

Take sections of hair and gently hold them at the mid-lengths, avoiding tension at the roots. Use a wide-tooth or afro comb to tease out any tangles at the ends of the hair.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Hydrate your natural hair daily. I recommend a spritz of Styling Mist for Glossy Finish. A blend of argan oil, keratin, pro vitamin b5, glycerin and sugar beet for added moisture, it’s the perfect nourishing blend for natural hair.

You can do this on dry hair. A couple of spritzes will do. Let it settle on hair, leaving it softer, with less breakage and improved elasticity. Its nourishing ingredients are also moisturising for your scalp.

Be careful not to overload the hair. If your hair easily absorbs moisture, you can use more product. If your hair is slow to absorb moisture, use less product. Using a little every day will help to maintain healthy, natural hair.

4. Avoid Heat

Heat exacerbates dryness in natural hair. I recommend letting your hair air dry. It may take time, but it’s much less damaging for the hair and will help to promote good condition. Wash your hair in warm, not hot, water to maintain condition. Gently squeezing as much excess water out of your hair with a microfibre towel will help to speed up drying time.

5. Wear a Silk or Satin Bonnet

Choosing a silk or satin bonnet is the best way of caring for afro-textured hair overnight. They reduce the friction as you move your head overnight, helping to protect against split ends. They also help to retain the curl definition of hair and prevent breakage and tangles. The bonnet is ideal when you use a hair treatment to hydrate your hair overnight. It will stop the product from marking your pillowcase and intensify the treatment.

6. Give your Hair a Break

Environmental factors play their part in drying out hair; sun, wind, pollution, air conditioning and central heating can all have an impact. If you want to give your hair a break from styling, a scarf is a great option to save time and protect your hair from the elements.

How to Care for Natural Hair | Density

Natural Hair Care

Understanding the density of your hair gives you more information and knowledge about caring for your curls.

Density is all about how much hair you’ve got; it makes a difference in how you care for your hair.

Low-density hair needs less moisture than High-Density hair.

So, when you use Restore and Shine Hair Masque to add moisture to your natural hair, use less product on low-density hair than on high-density hair.

You can check your hair density below.

1. Low Density Hair

You can easily see your scalp when parting dry hair.

2. Medium Density Hair

You can only partially see your scalp when parting dry hair.

3. High Density Hair

It’s difficult to see the scalp and partings don’t hold easily.
