Creating lift at the crown is an easy option to add volume to fine hair. Using simple techniques, you can give a volume boost to fine hair.
For this style, I used Velcro rollers and Styling Mist for Volume. Velcro rollers are perfect for creating volume at the crown of the model’s fine hair and my exclusive styling product gives her hair a natural hold with big results.
Follow my step-by-step guide to creating volume at the crown.
Before we start creating the style, I want you to feel confident working with Velcro rollers.
Once you know how to use them they are easy to work with. Practice will help perfect your technique.
This simple guide will give you the confidence to work with Velcro rollers, adding volume to any hairstyle.
Velcro rollers come in different sizes depending on the body and movement you want to create.
I used two 44mm Self-Grip Velcro rollers for this style.
Velcro rollers are an excellent investment. There is a technique to using them, and I know that they can be tricky at first.
But it’s just a question of practice, and once you get the hang of them, they are quick, easy to use, inexpensive and gentle on the hair.
1. Hair should be Damp not Wet
Velcro rollers are best applied when your hair is not completely dry. Prep your hair with a styling product before rough drying with a hairdryer and applying the rollers.
2. Take a Small Section of Hair
Decide where you would like to place the rollers and take a small section of hair, roughly half the width of the roller. It’s a common mistake to take too much hair in each section. That makes the application difficult and, hair can become tangled.
3. Hold at a Straight Angle and Create Gentle Tension
You can avoid tangling by holding your hair at a straight angle and creating gentle tension. If your hair is too loose, it will be difficult to remove the rollers. Hold that gentle tension and place the roller at the tip of the hair rolling up to the roots. Maintain the tension as you roll to prevent tangles.
4. Leave Roller in for 10-15 Minutes
I recommend leaving Velcro rollers in for 10 -15 minutes. When you are ready to remove, gently unroll the rollers from the hair. If you’ve followed steps 1-3, this should be easy to do.
How to Create Volume at the Crown | Overview
Our model has fine hair that is layered to give the hair more volume. In the ‘before’ image below, the hair was blow-dried using a brush. When compared to the ‘after’ image you can see that the hair doesn’t have as much volume at the crown. You can create more volume with blow-drying techniques but using the Velcro rollers is a much easier and quicker way to achieve results.

In the ‘after’ image, you can see that the hair has much more body and volume.
I’ve added volume by changing the parting from the centre. I’ve created a deep angle parting and then, using Velcro rollers and Styling Mist for Volume created volume at the crown. Follow my 4 easy steps below to create your own volume at the crown.

Add Volume at the Crown | 4 Easy Steps
1. Prep your Hair for Volume at the Crown
Wash and condition your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Because our model’s hair is fine and colour-treated, I used Revive and Shine Shampoo to add volume, and I treated the dry ends with our deep conditioner, Restore and Shine Hair Masque.
After rinsing out the hair mask or conditioner, gently squeeze the excess water out of your hair with a towel. Hair should be damp but not dripping wet.
2. Spritz for Volume at Crown
Now it’s time to add your styling product. Opt for a product that will give the hair volume.
I spritzed our model’s hair with a couple of pumps of hair volumiser Styling Mist for Natural Hold and Volume.
I focused the application mainly on the crown. Spray this super-light mist above the head to fall on your hair. It won’t leave any residue or stickiness.
Let your styling product sit for a few seconds and comb through the hair.
Blow-dry your hair, as usual, ensuring you don’t over-dry the hair. Your hair should still be warm and semi-dry when you apply the Velcro rollers. Take a section of hair at the crown, no greater than half the width of the roller. Appy one roller at your crown and leave it in place. Then take the second roller, putting it directly behind the first one.
The trick when applying Velcro rollers is to get as much tension as possible on the hair without pulling too hard at the roots. Do you feel tension at the roots? That means the roller is too tightly rolled.
Rollers in place, leave them for 10 to 15 minutes until your hair cools. If you are in a hurry, you can use the hairdryer to give the hair a quick blast of cold air. However, leaving them to cool has the same effect.
4. Gently Does It!
Gently remove the Velcro rollers and lightly comb or brush or use your fingers to push the hair in place. If you are using a brush be careful not to brush out the volume you’ve created.
Creating volume at the crown is a great way of styling fine hair, long or short, to give it a fuller look.
This technique of adding volume to the crown isn’t just for longer hair.
By maintaining length at the front of the hair you can easily get volume at the crown when styling shorter styles.
