How to Improve Scalp Health Naturally

Improving your scalp health starts with a good scalp care routine. The scalp is like a delicate ecosystem. It requires gentle care, regular attention and good hydration to prevent drying.

The scalp comprises tiny follicles. Your hair grows out of these follicles. Consequently, it’s vital to keep your scalp clean and free of oil and dirt. Keeping the follicles clean avoids any obstructions for hair growth and enables the scalp to support healthy hair growth.

Choose a good quality shampoo with gentle moisturising ingredients. I use pro-vitamin b5 across my range of hair care products. Provitamin B5 has benefits for the hair and the scalp.

It has vital moisturising properties for both skin and hair. It can penetrate both for deep moisturising.

Styling products with harsh ingredients can be a factor in leaving the scalp feel dry. I recommend avoiding any hair products that strip the scalp. If your styling product leaves your scalp feeling depleted or worse, dry and itchy, it’s time to make a change.

Seven Tips to Improve Scalp Health Naturally

  • Keep the scalp clean. Clean, fresh follicles free of build-up are optimum for hair growth and scalp health.
  • Choose a gentle shampoo for regular cleansing. I use Pro-Vitamin B5 in my shampoos and across my product range. It adds moisture to the hair and scalp.
  • Don’t overwork the scalp. Vigorous scrubbing can cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce our natural oils. That can clog up the follicles and obstruct healthy hair growth.
  • Gently massage the scalp. Give your scalp a firm, gentle massage when washing your hair. It will help to improve circulation and blood flow. Use your fingertips to apply firm pressure without overworking the scalp.
  • Don’t overheat the scalp. Cleanse the scalp with lukewarm water. Avoid excessive heat on the scalp when styling. Choose hair styling products that are gentle on the hair and scalp.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Eating a balanced diet helps support a healthy scalp for hair growth.
  • Drink Water. Maintaining hydration helps to keep hair and skin healthy and supple.

How to Take Care of your Scalp for Hair Growth

Having healthy hair growth means paying attention to the scalp. The scalp has a vital job to do. However, we don’t think about it until it becomes uncomfortable. A dry, itchy scalp causes discomfort and impacts hair growth.

Take care of your scalp for hair growth. Follow my three basic principles.

Three Principles of Scalp Care

  1. Keep it nourished with a balanced diet
  2. Cleanse your scalp regularly; be gentle
  3. Maintain hydration by drinking water and using moisturising hair products

We often take better care of the delicate skin on our faces and neck. However, the scalp needs the same level of attention. The scalp may not be as visual, but it has a significant impact on the health of your hair.

Scalp Care Routine

I regularly get questions about how often people should wash their hair. When they ask, they are thinking primarily about their hair. Behind the scenes, the scalp plays a vital role in hair health. So when thinking about any hair care routine, it’s essential to consider your scalp.

The scalp requires regular cleansing. Sebum is the oil produced naturally by our scalp and is vital for nourishing the hair. However, it attracts dirt. So it’s vital to have a routine of cleansing to prevent the follicles from becoming clogged.

It depends on your hair type, but some people with fine hair types will find that washing every day is essential; coarser hair types such as afro hair may need to wash once every couple of weeks. For many people, two to three times a week is sufficient.

When embarking on your scalp care routine, I recommend thinking about your hair type as a starting point. That will help you determine how often you should wash your hair.

Then take note of how your scalp feels.

Is your scalp excessively oily? If the answer is yes, consider how you are washing your hair and scalp. Are you being gentle enough? Remember, being too vigorous can over-activate the sebaceous glands and cause excessive oil.

Does your scalp feel dry? If yes, take a look at your shampoo, conditioners and styling products. Are they the right products for your scalp? Do they contain moisturising ingredients?

Once you start to observe the scalp, you can make adjustments to improve your scalp care routine.
