Step by Step Guide to a Bouncy Blow Dry

1   Start with freshly washed hair

Firstly, shampoo and condition your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. I know that may sound obvious. But getting this right will give you the best foundation for the finished style. If your hair is fine, you don’t want it to be made flat by heavy products – we are after maximum bounce after all!

That means if your shampoo and conditioner aren’t giving you enough moisture, you’ll find your hair is difficult to work with and not flexible enough to hold the style.

Maximise the condition of your hair by using Restore and Shine Hair Masque in place of your conditioner. This deep conditioner works for all hair types. Use to give your bouncy blow dry incredible body and shine.

2   Gently squeeze the excess water out of your hair

You can do this with a towel. However, if you have lots of hair, you may find you need to give hair a quick blast with the hairdryer to get rid of excess water.

Most importantly, hair should be damp but not dripping wet before you apply styling products.

3   Apply a volumising styling product

A quality volumiser or blow dry spray will help with adding volume and giving the finished style hold. At the same time, it should also help with styling.

For the model below, I used volumiser Styling Mist for Natural Hold and Volume. It does what it says on the bottle. That means it adds volume, but it also detangles and speeds up drying time.

By reducing the amount of time you spend under the hairdryer, you can save time.

Plus, it’s a hair-saver too!

By reducing drying time Styling Mist for Natural Hold and Volume reduces the amount of heat applied to your hair. That means your hair is at less risk of becoming dry and frizzy.

Plus, the conditioning ingredients in the mist have a counter-effect on the heat from the hairdryer.

I recommend you focus application on the ends and mid-lengths of the hair. Then, leave for a few seconds. So if you are using Styling Mist for Volume, you can either comb or use your fingers to push through the hair. However, if you are using another styling product, check the manufacturer’s instructions before application.

Styling Mist Volumiser

My hair is so much easier to manage with this hair mist. It detangles and it makes blow-drying much quicker. It’s on the pricey side but to be honest, I’ve been using this mist for about 2 months now and you really don’t need a lot. It says 2 to 3 pumps. My hair is quite long so I probably use more like 4 -5 but it still lasts a long time.

4   Comb your parting into place

You’ll see from our model that I created a side parting.

There’s a reason for this; it’s a great way of adding additional volume to the hair and, of course, giving your bouncy blow dry extra bounce.

Here on our model, I used the simple technique of a side parting to add more volume and bounce to the hair.5   Parting in place, it’s time to section your hair

5   Section the Hair

Section clips are like having an extra pair of hands. That means they are an essential hair styling tool.

The easiest way to style a bouncy blow dry is to split your hair into 4 sections.

Firstly, imagine a horizontal line running across your head from ear to ear as near to the crown as possible.

Secondly, imagine a vertical line, front to back, through the middle of your crown.

That means you now have  4 sections; 2 at the front and 2 at the back of the head.

So you can clip your sections in place and work on one at a time.

Section clips are an essential styling tool, making the job of doing your at-home-bouncy-blow-dry much easier.

Create Sections to make Hair Styling Easier

  1. Split your hair into 4 sections so that you have 2 at the front and 2 at the back.
  2. Use your section clips to hold your hair in place.

Creat Sections Front and Back for Bouncy Blow Dry at Home

6   Sections in place, get to work with your brush

Work with a round brush to add volume and movement to the hair in each section.

Round brushes come in different sizes; smaller brushes for small waves and movement and fatter brushes for big waves and movement.

As you can see with our model, we’ve created big waves and movement using a fat round brush.

Choosing the right round brush for your bouncy blow dry.  Choose a small brush for smaller waves and bigger, fatter brushes for bigger waves and movement.

How to use a Round Brush for a Bouncy Blow Dry

If you’ve got long hair, chances are you’ve worked with a round brush to blow dry your hair.

However, unless you’ve had training in using a round brush, it can be a little daunting.

Keep reading to get my tips on using a round brush for your bouncy blow dry.

Tips for using a round brush to do a bouncy blow dry

  1. Within the sections you’ve created, take small sections of hair, starting with the hair underneath and working your way up.
  2. Hold the brush at the end of the hair and roll to the mid-lengths. Or wherever you want the movement.
  3. Don’t cover the entire width of your brush with hair. Keep a bit of space at either end of your brush.
  4. Maintain a firm but gentle tension on the hair as you position and roll the brush. This important as it helps prevent tangles.
  5. If you want volume at the roots, you can gently lift the brush upwards at an angle away from the head.
  6. Once hair is rolled and ready, apply a quick blast of heat to the hair. Leave to cool for a few seconds, or if you prefer, you can give the hair a quick blast of cool air. Unroll the brush and work on the next piece of hair to complete the whole section.
  7. The hairdryer’s nozzle should always be parallel to the hair and angeled downwards so that you don’t lift the cuticle.
  8. For additional movement, you can partially roll the hair. Try giving it a quick blast of heat, then roll again, giving the hair another blast of heat. I advise caution here. Be careful not to overdry the hair, as this can leave hair looking dry and brittle.
  9. Another option for creating more movement and waves is to twist the angle of the brush as you work with the hairdryer.

The thing about working with a round brush is that practice makes perfect.

When doing your bouncy blow dry at home, I recommend starting work on the 2 back sections of the hair first.

Because working with the back of the hair can be the most awkward with the angle of the brush.

That means you can get this out of the way without compromising the front sections of the hair.

Having said that, once you get used to working with a round brush, it will become easier. I promise! 🙂
